Botox Q & A

What are Botox and Dysport?

Botox and Dysport are both made from purified forms of botulinum toxin that’s used to treat deep wrinkles and facial folds. As botulinum toxin blocks the nerves responsible for muscle contractions, the targeted muscles relax, and wrinkles are significantly diminished or eliminated.

What wrinkles are treated by Botox and Dysport?

Your face develops two types of wrinkles. Dynamic wrinkles are caused by years of repetitive muscle movements responsible for facial expressions, like frowning and squinting.

The second type appears over time due to age-related changes in your skin. As you age, your skin becomes dehydrated and thins out. You also produce less collagen and elastin, so skin loses strength and elasticity.

Sun damage further accelerates age-related changes. The combined effect results in lines known as static wrinkles.

Botox and Dysport effectively treat dynamic wrinkles such as:

  • Crow’s feet
  • Frown lines
  • Forehead furrows
  • Bunny lines on the upper nose
  • Neck bands

Will Botox or Dysport affect your natural facial expressions?

Dr. Pruden targets a few small areas of the specific muscles responsible for your problematic wrinkles. The majority of your muscles continue to work normally, so your face shows expression and your appearance stays natural.

What happens during treatment with Botox or Dysport?

At SkinMD, Botox and Dysport injections are administered by a professionally trained, highly experienced team that includes the doctor and a nurse practitioner.

Before your session, Dr. Pruden explains the procedure and answers your questions, so you’ll know what to expect. Treatment takes about 15 minutes but could be shorter depending on the injection site.

After your treatment, the area may be slightly red, but there’s minimal, if any, bleeding, and little-to-no swelling. You don’t need to plan for significant downtime, but you should wait several hours before participating in strenuous activities.

When will you see results and how long do they last?

You’ll see the benefits of your Botox or Dysport injection in 2-3 days; then your results last up to four months. You can choose to get another round of injections when the effects wear off. In many cases, results last longer when you have repeat Botox or Dysport injections.

When you’re ready to reclaim a youthful appearance and get rid of deep wrinkles, call SkinMD or book an appointment online.
