Kybella Q & A

What is Kybella®

Kybella is the first FDA-approved treatment of its kind — an injectable treatment that permanently eliminates your double chin. The injection is safe and effective for moderate to large amounts of submental fullness, which is fat that accumulates under your chin.

What causes a double chin?

Double chins typically develop as you gain weight, but that isn’t the only possible cause. The genes you inherit also play a role, causing some people to have a double chin regardless of their weight.

Aging is another factor that influences submental fat. As you age, skin loosens, and the natural layer of fat under your skin begins to sag. Their combined effect results in fat accumulation under your chin.

How does Kybella work?

Kybella consists of synthetic deoxycholic acid, a substance naturally found in your body that breaks down dietary fats. When Kybella is injected into the chin area, it produces the same results and destroys fat cells. Your body naturally carries away the cellular waste, which means the treated fat cells are permanently eliminated.

What happens during Kybella treatment?

Dr. Pruden may apply a topical anesthetic or numbing gel to ensure your comfort. Your treatment, which takes about 15-20 minutes, consists of multiple injections placed close together in the targeted area of fat.

The number of injections and treatments you may need depend on the amount of submental fat you have. Although many patients get the results they want with 2-4 treatments, Dr. Pruden may administer up to six treatments, with each one at least one month apart.

After your Kybella injections, you might have some redness, swelling, bruising, or an aching type of pain. Recovery time is different for each person, but these side effects usually go away within a week.

You can go back to work as soon as you want after treatment. Although you can resume normal activities the same day, Dr. Pruden may recommend waiting 24 hours before engaging in strenuous exercise.

When will you see results?

Fat cells gradually break down and are eliminated over several weeks, so it takes a little time to see the results. If you plan to have more than one treatment, you’ll also need to wait until they’re all finished to see your optimal results.
